Mary Stavrou

Mary Stavrou

Mary Evangeline Stavrou - September 30, 1952 - November 3, 1999, Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York

Mary was born September 30, 1952, the daughter of George S. and Irene Bishop Stavrou.  Mary's father died in the Bonham VA hospital Feb. 19, 1965, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.    Mary's mother died March 16, 1991, in New York and is buried beside Mary's father in Arlington National Cemetery.  Irene Bishop was born and raised in Paris, Texas, and was working in New York where she met and married George Stavrou.  They came back here to live in Irene's childhood home.  That home was a beautiful historic home at 503 8th SE that is now falling into shambles, a fact that disturbs many of us from that generation.  Mary's grandparents here were Dr. T. V. and Nellie M. Thompson Bishop.    Mrs. Bishop died in 1962 and that is about the time the Stavrous moved to Texas.

After graduation from Paris High School, Mary attended and graduated from The American University in Washington, D. C. with a BA in Philosophy and International Relations.  During her time at the university, Mary was Student  Representative of Philosophy and Religion (3 years) and Features Editor for the Diplomatic Pouch, (2 years).  Mary died November 3, 1999 in Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York.

Mary was a very sweet and brillantly smart girl.  I spent many hours with her at that beautiful old house working on school projects together.  She also had a very good sense of hurmor.  She was shy but once you got to know her she was a wonderful friend.  When I got married she sent me a gorgeous salad bowel to my parent's home.   I still have it to this day.
